The Miley’s of the World

I admit that I was horrified with the rest of the country as I watched Miley Cyrus’s raunchy performance at the VMAs last night, however I found myself to be more disgusted by America’s response today. I am honestly not surprised by Miley’s show. We’ve all watched many young starlets go down this same path as they navigate through the pressures and influences of show business. While I certainly agree that her performance was inappropriate to say the least, I am appalled by the attitude and hate expressed by so many adults. Nearly every response has been a hateful attack on Miley. We are focusing our energy in the wrong place and I’d dare to say we are even continuing the cycle. The collective voice of the country is saying that Miley Cyrus is a skank and a worthless human being (translated from Facebook to a PG-13 version). But let’s think about this, this is the collective voice of the same country that taught a young Hannah Montana that sex sells, that being smart isn’t cool and that you must conform to be accepted.

Challenge society, challenge your own thinking – I know I had to, but don’t persecute a young woman who is so clearly in need of guidance. Our initial shock and disapproval is justified and tough love is good. I am not asking to sugar coat a much needed discussion, and this isn’t an excuse for bad choices, but if we don’t step back and consider why it even came to this point we will never be able to connect with the teens that need to hear from us. When the Mileys of the world are confused by the hate they are receiving from the same society that taught them that’s what they wanted from her, where will they turn? Will it be to the loving guidance of an adult who shows her grace and a new path? Or will she only be able to find adults who call her a skank and make it clear that they want nothing to do with her “low-life ways?” No wonder the next step these stars take often seems to be drug abuse – there is seemingly no escape from this trap. Thoughtfully consider which adult you want to be for these teens. They are watching.

Tessa and Nick | Rock Creek Gardens | Puyallup Wedding Photographer

Tessa & Nick had a beautiful wedding! Tessa included so many thoughtful touches that she made herself and were very well done! I loved how their wedding was such a true celebration. They had such a fun group of guests and Nick & Tessa really seemed to cherish every moment of their first day together as husband and wife.

Tessa and I went to highschool together and it’s been so great to connect with her this year and to meet Nick! These two are so sweet together and are lots of fun to be around. I could say so much more about their awesome day, but since a picture is worth a thousand words I’ll let them do the talking. Without further adieu, here are some of my favorites from their day! More will be posted on the JP Facebook Page as well so be sure to stop by soon!

A Family For Every Child, WA State // Volunteer Photographer

I have been trying to figure out for a while now the best way to combine my passions for photography and helping others. I’ve donated plenty of sessions in the past, but aside from giving away free photos it doesn’t really feel like it helps anyone. Well, I am very excited to say that I have found a way to do this that seems to be my perfect fit for helping others through photography. Actually… I have found and started doing this in three totally different ways, but for now I am only going to tell you about one ;)

And here’s a really dorky action shot of me doing my thing  :)

If you haven’t heard of A Family For Every Child, check them out! They are a non-profit serving Washington and Oregon. Their mission is to find loving adoptable homes for children waiting in foster care. They have volunteer opportunities nationwide which is a huge support in doing all the great work that they do.

Last week I had the opportunity to be a volunteer photographer with them!  The Heart Gallery  is their program that works with professional photographers to take photos of children that are waiting to be adopted. These photos will be used on website, fliers, and bios about them to show them in a positive light and illustrate a little glimpse into their personality.

I love to make these sessions into a fun activity and capture them being themselves. It was great to spend some time with David last week, learn about his interests and get some fun photos! Click here: to check out David’s bio including some photos from our session! David is a friendly and easy-going guy, we had a great time!

I’m so happy to have connected with A Family For Every Child and am excited for next time!
